Birding

Season

Rainfall and the level of the pans and lakes play a very important roll role in birding in this area.

The first waders arrive in September and the best time for birding is from September to March.

Birds

You will find about 87 water bird species in the Lake District and about 76 grassland related species.

Self-help Tours

Florence Guest Farm provides each room with a laminated birding route map. The route is a circular drive of 60km, mainly on gravel roads. Best birding spots are marked on the map.

Birding Guides

In Chrissiesmeer we have a local water bird guide (a nature lover, and person with a very good knowledge of the water birds in the district).

She is able to take guests on a water bird tour during the birding season.

Aretha Strydom: Cell: 082 821 3081, has a passion for water birds. Please contact her to arrange a birding tour. The costs will be verified by her.

Aretha has permission and access to private land and knows where to find the special ones.

Vehicle

Please provide your own vehicle, a 4x4 or bakkie is recommended.

Birding Programs

Birding SA got involved in Chrissiesmeer and is putting a real effort and money to uplift the community and eco-tourism.

Wits Bird Club together with local farmers are busy training local sheep herders to do birding and to gather information, they are after all the persons spending most of their time in the field.
